Thank you to everyone who took the time to read, engage with, and comment on the draft neighbourhood plan during the recent consultation.
Your feedback and suggestions are invaluable in helping us shape a plan that reflects the priorities and values of our community. We are now reviewing all comments and will carefully consider them and take action as required as we move toward the next stage of the plan’s development.
We understand there may be some confusion between the Draft Chartham Neighbourhood Plan and the Draft Canterbury District Local Plan, so here’s a quick explanation:
- The Chartham Neighbourhood Plan is a community-led plan focused on the future of Chartham parish. It deals with local priorities such as housing, green spaces, heritage, community facilities, and sustainability at a parish level.
- The Canterbury District Local Plan, on the other hand, is produced by Canterbury City Council and sets the framework for how the district is expected to grow and change in the future.
Canterbury City Council required us to allocate14 dwellings to Chartham in our plan and this is what we have done. Whereas the new draft plan, which is not yet approved, will require 335 houses to Chartham by 2040.
We encourage residents to stay engaged with both processes to ensure Chartham’s voice is heard at every level.
What Happens Next?
Now that the consultation has closed, here’s what’s coming up: Neighbourhood Plan Consultation
1. Review & Revise:
We will analyse all the comments received and make appropriate revisions to the draft plan.
2. Pre-Submission Plan:
The revised plan will be formally submitted to Canterbury City Council, along with a Consultation Statement and Basic Conditions Statement.
3. Independent Examination:
An independent examiner will assess the neighbourhood plan to ensure it meets all legal requirements and reflects the community’s views.
4. Referendum:
If the examiner approves the plan, it will go to a public referendum in the parish. If a majority of residents vote in favour, the plan will be formally adopted (or "made") and become a legal part of the planning framework for Chartham.
